As the technology changes day by day so I have also switched myself from desktop to laptop with core i3 processor and windows 7 operating system on it. I wanted to store some movies in one of the drive but as the drive in which I wanted to add movies is full. Is there any way to increase the partition without formatting? I want a solution to that will help me in increasing the partition size of my hard disk.

You can increase the size of the drive without formatting it on windows 7 platform. Windows 7 is the new version of windows operating system. Windows 7 has many features and also it supports for incremental upgrade automatically. You can easily create partition in windows 7 without formatting the hard disk. The steps to create the partition are as follows:
    • You need to click on the “My Computer” icon from the desktop.
    • Select manage and then click on the disk management.
    • In the disk management window you will get a list of all the drives of your system.
    • Click on drive on which you want to increase the disk space and then select extend.
    • Enter the size and it will automatically increase the size and then correspondingly decrease the size from the other drives.
    • Click on ok button to save the changes.

You can create new partition of the hard drive very easily. For partitioning the hard drive you need to start the computer into the Command Prompt Mode. In the Command Prompt Mode type”FDISK”. FDISK window will appear with multiple options. The options are Enter 1 to create DOS Partition or you can Enter 2 to create extended partition. Now select the drive and enter the maximum number of size you want to allocate it. Type a name for the new partition. Now you need to press the ESC button to exit from the partition window and restart the system. The drive size will get increased by the specified size.

Thanks for giving me the solution. I applied the above given solution and my laptop hard disk was resized successfully. I also want to know if there is some readymade software available that can be used to resize the hard disk. Also give me the steps to resize the partition using that software.

For resizing the hard disk you can use the Norton Partition Magic 8.0. This is a very powerful tool available that can be used for other function instead of creating and resizing the partitioning. The features of Norton Partition Magic 8.0 are as follows
    1. It can create, resize and copy the partition.
    2. Combine or divide the partition.
    3. Install a new operating system and can also take the back up.
    4. It can be used to convert the partition of one file system into another.
