Fan runs irregularly in Asus M50SA

Finally I got a problem with my Asus M50Sa laptop. It is not the big issue but it is related to the fan. It starts at asymmetrical intervals. Sometimes it runs immediately at startup but some situation it starts after several minutes, nearly 5 to 15 minutes. When the fan is not running on my system it get heat up very quickly and automatically shut downs the laptop. Is the fan operation is related to system hardware or software? How can resolve this problem? I am deciding to buy a new fan for laptop. If the issue continue like this what is the use of installing the fan?

The bad motor of fan can act like this manner. Otherwise it is just the matter of lack in lubrication. The software or OS also affect the running of fan. If there is any issue the fan should run immediately after the startup. If it is keep n troubling you then take out the fan by yourself or by the use of some professionals and clean it gently. May be the dust is blocking the motor. Use some oil on fan bearing. You can pop up the fan very easily because it is just held by some kind of magnetic material. If the fan doesn’t going to come out very easily then don’t put the pressure on it.

As from your post it seems to be that the fan’s motor had been worn out. Can you here some kind of cracking noise from the fan? If it is making bad clicking like sound when it tries to run then assume that the motor could be jammed. The bad connections also make sense on the fan operations. It will be either the issue of bad wires or a bad connector on the main board. Also try to resetting the BIOS. This is because some fan operations is handled by the BIOS and by mistake you might have changes the options there. If you have already tried these settings then there only way and that is changing fan.

I think that your system fan is spinning according to the heat produced by the system itself. The fan changes or speeds up its rpm when there is much pressure on application or processes. When you play the game the fan speeds up to 1500 - 3400 rpm depending on the running speed of the program. But in normal condition like when the system in idle position the fan falls down to 100-500rpm. It is controlled by some features of the OS or the BIOS. Some time the fan decides to run according to the cpu/gpu temperature.

Disconnect the fan and also its power cable from the laptop if possible. Then attach it to an exterior 5V power supply and see how it will run. If the fan spins at full speed then there is nothing wrong with it. It could be the problem of the board. Yes it sounds little strange but it may be possible. Try to resetting the BIOS CMOS and see for further action on fan. Resetting of CMOS means removing from and reattaching to the main board. You can also check from the liveCD of Ubuntu by a stress test like mprime or prime 95.
