How to tether connection between iPhone 3Gs to iPad

I need help for tethering internet connection between iPhone and iPad. I am not able to use internet on my apple ipad. I want to use my iPhone to create a connection between both the devices. But does this really works. What are the condition for that. I found a comment which states that this will work on Jailbreaked iphone. I had not done that yet. Thanks.
