Ipod classic charges when connected but does not get detected

I am facing a very unusual problem with my Ipod. I have an Apple Ipod classic 80gb which I connect to my desktop computer. The computer had Windows XP operating which I upgraded to Windows 7 recently. But after upgradation of the operating system, my Ipod classic charges when connected but does not get detected on the computer. I dont know why I am facing such problem with my Ipod and hence need your help in solving the issue. So if there are any solutions/suggestions about the topic then please share some information. Thanks in advance.

Which version of Itunes are you using? The problem which you are facing can be due to Itunes which is installed on the computer. The applications which are installed on the computer have lot of files which are associated to the application. If the files which are associated to the application are missing or corrupt then the application will not work properly. It is possible that the Itunes is corrupt due to which it is not getting initialized when the Ipod is connected to the computer. Remove the current version of the Itunes from the computer and remove all the files/keys which are related to the application. Download latest version of the Itunes and install it on the computer. See if the Ipod gets detected or not.

Check the connecting cord which is used to connect the Ipod to the computer. The connecting cord which is used to connect the Ipod to the computer is a USB cord. USB cord consists of number of lines of the conductors which can get damaged due to improper handling or storage. Also the connector of the cord, gets oxidized due to which the Ipod will not get detected. Clean the connecting terminal and see if the Ipod is getting detected. Also try and change the connecting cord and see if the Ipod is getting detected or not. Changing the connecting cord will solve the problem I think.

If the USB port on the motherboard is not working properly then also the Ipod will not get detected. Therefore check if the USB port on the computer is working properly or not. Check if the USB drivers are installed and working on the computer. To check if the installed drivers are installed and working properly, right click on My computer and select Device manager. Now highlight the installed USB drivers and see if there are any caution signs. Follow the troubleshooting procedure and see if the Ipod gets detected. If troubleshooting does not help then try and update the drivers. Updating the drivers should help in solving the problem.

Windows 7 has lot of compatibility issues with many devices. Due to this compatibility issue, lot of devices do not work properly in Windows 7. The incompatibility issue rises because of unavailability of appropriate drivers. I would suggest you to go to official website of Apple and then download the appropriate drivers for the model of the Ipod which you are using and which is supported by Windows 7. After installing the appropriate drivers for the Ipod, check if the Ipod gets detected on the computer or not.

Ipod also has an operating system installed on it. This operating system is known as firmware of the Ipod. Like any other software the firmware of the Ipod can also get stuck which will result in Ipod not getting detected. To bring the Ipod out of the loop, you will have to reset the Ipod. To reset the Ipod, press and hold the Menu and center click till the Apple logo appears. Once the apple logo appears, release the keys and let the Ipod restart. Now connect the Ipod to the computer and see if the Ipod gets detected.
