How to Create Backups of iPhones

My friends has recently bought a new iPhone from United States and he don't have much more idea about iPhone, he only know how to insert data into his iPhone and now he need to create a backup of his iPhone for which he had called me up, does anyone know if there is a way to force iTunes to backup your iPhone? I thought that it backed up everytime you sync but mine does not and he is having Windows XP SP 3 as his Operating system.

If you really want to have a backup of your iPhone then you can get it by goign to following location C : Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup over here you will get a directory which will look like GUID and in that there is the files that itunes uses to backup your phone and all the settings you have to copy paste it.

Only if your iPhone is being configured to synchronize with a particular system, then iTunes will automatically makes a backup of iPhone on that system when you synchronize, this thing doesn't happen automatically for that you need to configured it iTunes will back up iPhone every time you connect it to that computer. Automatic syncing is turned on by default. iTunes only makes one backup each time you connect, even if you sync multiple times before disconnecting.
