Do I need Data Plan for T-mobile G1?

Hi,

T-mobile insists on one having a data plan with the G1. I got the G1 for free, and I need to unlock it so I can put my AT&T sim card in, but I need to know if I have to add a data plan or not. I'm wondering if I unlock the phone can I use it without the internet. And what kind of unlocking would it require. So do I need Data Plan for T-mobile G1?

Yes, you need to subscribe a data plan, just call At&t local store or 611 to confirm it. For T-mobile G1, Data plan is mandatory, you can't use the phone without it and you cannot quit the data plan easily and use the phone. All your apps will be locked out.

Not sure about being able to cancel the data plan, but one thing you could try would be to activate the phone using someone else's SIM card with a data plan. you can also you can activate it over a WiFi connection. You don't need a data plan.
