laptop screen shows nothing when turn on why?

I think its something really wrong with my laptop screen.
I turn my laptop on & everything comes up quite fine but the laptop screen. It don't show me anything.

Can you guys please help me what should I do first?

Can you please tell us which company is your laptop?
Are you able to see the BIOS screen?
IF not then please try to reset the screen first.

Hey I am facing same problem with my laptop but its Macintosh Powerbook 140. It starts up but nothing shows up on the screen. Though I am sure its running inside but the screen shows nothing. The background remains black.
Do anyone suggest me anything? Do I have to reset the ram as RasMus said?

I had same problem & my friend suggested me to run it from battery power when restarting, at it really worked for me.
I hope it works for you too.
Do you here any windows load sound? or the led lights on the laptop lit?
One of my friend found that on his laptop same thing was happening since one of the memory DIMM's went bad
