Apple has released a few hours ago an update for its platinum multimedia show, the Apple TV. This new version 2.2 fixes some bugs but also some new features. We note in particular the possibility of creating playlists Genius and On-The-Go directly from the Apple TV. The metadata support has also been improved since it is now possible to view the synopsis of a movie during playback and browse the list of movies by actor or director.
The update is done directly from the Update software settings menu on the Apple TV.
Those for whom the Apple TV is too limited (particularly in terms of formats supported) there is some of the availability of the Apple TV USB Creator. This application unofficial easy to install alternative media centers boxee and XBMC Media Center on the Apple device.
XBMC Media Center is the legacy of the famous software for the first generation of Xbox, recently focused on Mac OS X and especially that supports an infinite number of formats using some bookstores decoding as mplayer.
Boxee meanwhile is a much younger (still in alpha) that, failing to support all formats that supports its big brother XBMC (on which it is based), emphasizes the social aspect. It allows access to many online content (from Last.fm and YouTube for example) but also and above all to share its taste and enjoy the recommendations of other users. Trailers and songs can be played in a few clicks.
Finally, Apple has conducted an updated maintenance of iTunes. According to the Cupertino firm, version 8.0.1 enhances stability, improves performance and provides several important security fixes. The problem causing a blue screen in Windows Vista when connecting an iPod to the computer has been corrected The update is done through the Update utility.
