    Overclocking the Radeon HD 5970

I am here again to check some steps while overclocking the Radeon HD 5970 graphic card. I have found a thread discussing about the Intel Core Quad Q6600 at 4GHz overclock and I found some useful information from your discussions. So I thought to ask you about the Radeon HD 5970. Please tell me, till what limits I can overclock this graphic card? I am sure that you members will help me like the last time. I am expecting your replies soon.

Initially you will have to start by applying the maximum voltage. After pertaining the maximum voltages startup FurMark, disable full screen. After disabling the full screen, choose stability test, choose an option 640x480, press on GO. Amplify the core frequency; you want to monitor GPU temperatures as the GPUs can rise to 100°C now!! In Overdrive boost GPU Core clock in 25 MHz increments. After each incremental clock frequency will increase, hit apply. Don’t forget to check the temperatures. 100°C is your limit. If you see artifacts either stop Furmark without delay or restart. If you machine gets locked up, restart, do again the same procedure and drop down at least 25 MHZ, if possible 50 MHz. Keep monitoring that temperature. Above 100°C is not acceptable at all -- the GPUs will involuntarily down clock if they are overheating past 100° C -- and with Furmark running for a couple of minutes.

With such a card, you are obviously trying to push even further the operating frequency chosen by Asus. During our tests, we naturally come to this exercise with the OverDrive utility CATALYST drivers. We have little difficulty reaching the 925 MHz frequency for the chip and 1350 MHz memory. Except that now ... even by setting the fan speed to 85%, the price of a terrible noise, the less game crashes a few seconds after starting. We reviewed our claims down ... not necessarily more successful.

There are chances that your system will get locked up. Don't be too frightened about a few system lockups and restarts, really. If you are scared to do so, I would recommend you not to overclock. It is must to find the upper limit threshold of what you can accomplish. The following are an output of it :

With a modest voltage alteration the Radeon HD 5970 can be modified. Keep an eye on your GPU (now reaching 90 C) and VRM temperatures though. Remember that we contravened the 300W TDP now though, here's an impression of our new power consumption
