    Athlon Thunderbird overclocking

    Hi,
I have found a old processor called Athlon Thunderbird 900Hz. This is a AMD Thunder processor. I was having a old system which has stopped working. So I got the processor for free. Now I want to perform overclokcing on this processor. This will my first time. How is this processor and what are the specification of the same.

Here is some specifications details of this processor. It has a Core etched in 0.18 micron aluminum or copper depending on frequency. It Works on motherboards equipped with socket A. The L1 Cache is 128KB and L2 Cache is 256 KB running at the processor frequency. The transition to the 256 KB of L2 cache is identical to the 256 KB of Copermine Pentium III, Pentium III evolution of Katmai. AMD follows developments from Intel, while improving the product.

The Thunderbird is not as well known for its performance in terms of overclocking. Originally it runs on a 100MHz bus with a multiplier of 9. However when we connected the L1 bridges, which can change the multiplier, the CPU tested successfully pass with a multiplier of 11, and thus obtain a frequency of 1100 MHz processor. For this he has still been necessary to increase the voltage from 0.1 V and 1.75 V to 1.85 V, which is the maximum voltage for most motherboards for Socket A current.

If you go from the other point of view, by changing the frequency of the bus without changing the multiplier, we have reached a frequency of 114 MHz bus, which gives a frequency of 1026 MHz processor. It was also necessary to increase the voltage to 1.85 V. These results were obtained from an ABIT KT7 motherboard with a fan on the chipset. But watching it though I noticed that there was no thermal paste between the heatsink and the chipset ... In other words, a simple trick. On a EPoX 8KTA2 the same frequency has been obtained

The AMD Thunderbird 900 MHz processor is a quality that gives good performance, for office software, but also for games. The processor FPU is clearly powerful and moving at 256 KB of L2 cache on die still currently update performance compared to previous generations of Athlons. The 900 MHz version offers advantage be available at a reasonable price.

Also this processor supports overclocking well, not to the extent that the Duron, but rather from 900 MHz to 1100 MHz without changing the bus frequency. What the sudden you will optimize your memory settings (CAS2). Not to mention that the supply of motherboards for Thunderbird / Duron is expanding day by day and motherboard manufacturers make available new BIOS enabling correct defaults for youth of these cards.
