It completely depends upon the usage of the computer user.
Normally, the PCs used for the office purposes experiences heavy loads at times and are under continous processing. As a result, they need to be cleaned every 5-6 months atleast to maintain the performance.....
However, if you are using the PC for the personal/home use, then it's OK to clean-up once in a year.....
You just need to power down your system and dispatch the heatsink and clean it periodically....may be say once in every 6 months.
This will help your system to be protected from overheating and hence achieve performance maintainence.
Well, I had not cleaned any internal part of the cabinet from last 2 years.
Few days back, when I installed an additional hard-disk I noticed there was a considerable amount of dust accumulated on top of the vanes. I tried to cleaned it off with a stiff stencil brush and a tooth pick to clear out as much as I could from the vanes and set the vacuum cleaner nozzle on the job too. However, it is still far from completely clean.
