Well you can use the following thing to know whether Windows Update Service is working or not.
    • You have to click on the Start button and enter services.msc in the search run box.
    • Now go for Automatic Updates service and double click on it.
    • You have to choose Local System Account and uncheck ‘allow service to interact with desktop’ checkbox
    • Now see for Hardware Profile and see that service is enabled or not.
    • Click on the General tab and start up type should be selected as Automatic. If it is not then select the same from the drop down.
    • Now go for service status and make sure that service is started.
