Yes indeed there are a few of such services namely Mozy, Carbonite, Jungle Disk, rsyncx with a low-priced web host, perl scripts mirroring your data to the server in any of your collegeue ‘s basement ... but it is just not Mac-like to have so much option. There might be a default option as well , and I am pretty sure that Apple would prefer to control those . Along with the online service there are also speculations that Apple is building a datacenter as well .

Yes as far as these data centers are concerned , they all posses their own servers and they posses the confined audience as well . If you wish to purchase anything from it you are just one click away , so data centers for that purpose people do not put off while they think their options. A far as the online software you were talking about named Time Machine , as it rest is OK, but it is not perfect. It can simply be stolen or cracked along with your computer in a real disaster. And you are not are not permitted to take it everywhere you go.

If you talking about the there would also be a small scope to combine it with MobileMe. If they already host the images, it will not be wiser to make it available for the public. There are lot of devices you can associate things they could do here - iPad, MBA, iPhone, iMac - all associated to a middle repository. Also as much as I like Apple I do not actually any reliance on them if I am using my data for business purposes.

I use time machine for my permanent backups, of my data, system and applications. I also back up my user data (personal/ work folders about once a week) on a high class portable hard disk drive that is kept variant from my system. Although I make use of iDisk, largely to have things available on the move I would not wish to use on line storage as it would be giving up control of my data to a third person.
