Unable to play VCD in Mint 10

I was having Microsoft windows XP SP3 operating system installed on my Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop. Last night I installed Linux Mint 10 operating system in another drive of my desktop. I have also updated all my drivers and installed Kaspersky antivirus with the latest update. I am facing problem while playing VCD in my VLC player. I can play DVD’s with ease but I am unable to play VCD's and therefore I need a solution which will help me in troubleshooting this problem so that I can play VCD in my VLC player without any problem.

If you are facing problem while playing VCD in VLC player then you can easily troubleshoot this problem by following the steps given below
    • You need to start the system and login as administrator.
    • After login into the system you need to start the VLC media player by double clicking on it.
    • You need to insert the VCD into the DVD-ROM drive. Select Media and then click on Advance open file>Disc>SVCD/VCD.
    • In the advance option you may need to click on the starting position/Entry to anything else other than '0'".
    • Now the VLC player will start to play file without any problem.

If the VLC player is not playing the VCD then there might be file format issue. You need to check the file format that you are trying to play. If the files on VCD is in different file format which the VLC player does not support then you may face problems. If the VLC player does not support that file format then in that case you may need to download and install codec. Codec are software which is used for supporting different file format so that you can play it using different types of player.

If the VLC player is not playing the VCD that you have inserted into the DVD-ROM drive then there might be driver problem. If you have not installed drivers for DVD-ROM drive then it will not identify the VCD that you have inserted into it. You need to download and install drivers for DVD-ROM from the manufacturer website and after the drivers installation the DVD-ROM will identify the inserted VCD. Now the VLC player will play the VCD without any problem.

If the issue of playing VCD in VLC player has not been solved by installing the driver, by installing codec then the DVD-ROM drive which you are using to play the VCD might not be functioning properly. If the DVD drive does not have a green power light on or is making weird noises, then the drive itself may be part of the issue. You need to shut down the system and then restart it again. If the VCD that you have inserted to the DVD drive to play is having scratches and dust then also you might face problems while playing it. You need to make sure that the VCD is not having any dust or scratch on it.
