Cannot install audio driver in linux

I have Linux operating system installed in my system. I used to operate windows system first. In fact I have both of the operating system installed in my system. But my windows does not work as smooth as Linux , so I am trying to learn Linux and it's basic functions. I tried to play a music file in it, it shows the tab controller move further but does not produce any sound from it. I think there is something wrong with the drivers , I compiled 2.6.35-rc1kernel which is the latest one and after that aI tried to install the audio driver, but it shows some sort of error. I think there is something wrong with the driver itself. Can anyone help? Your replies will be appreciated.

If you say so then there is definitely an audio driver issue , or the audio driver you have installed is not either compatible with the configuration of your system i.e your speakers or the operating system or even both .You did not mention which type of system do you have and which version or distro of Linux you are currently using. I do not think compiling the kernel source code will help you to diagnose anything about the sound issue you are facing. Just go through the documentation that might have come with it. You did not even mention which version of drivers you were trying to install. if you have any other operating system just play and check the music file in that.

Re: Cannot install audio driver in linux

I will tell you my whole system configuration. I have an assembled desktop system with and old pentium processor, 160GB of hard drive and SBS 2.0 creative speakers. First I had windows operating system, I then tried to mount one more operating system ( Linux). But my elder brother, who is a technician has forbidden me to do so because he says it will put unwanted load on the processor. I see my future in software development and Linux is quite helpful in programming so I opted for Linux rather than Windows.I will add windows to my operating system list once I have upgraded my system with a latest processor. The sound driver which I installed is Alsa driver 1.0.23 after I had built from the source code. Is there anything you want to know then please do not be shy to ask again.

The Latest Alsa driver version is 1.023 , which you have downloaded already. Download it again if you do not find the correct driver in the official website then find it in the repository. I am asking you to look at your header . If you are using a Linux desbian 5.0 , I think they are different from your library , so I think that is the reason why you are unable to play any music file. Check the kernel source code tree once again type ln -s /usr/src/linx-2.6.xxx /usr/src/linux , you should get an inline function that should be included in <linux/pm_qos_params.h>. If you are getting the inline function the in some other header file then it is an error that has occurred in the implicit declaration.

The above steps and commands definitely increase the probability of success and resolution but you have already mentioned that you are new to Linux so I do not think you should get into all these fuss. Whenever we think we are facing some sort of failure in things such as sound and video we should always check the hardware first. It is quite possible that you have accidentally muted or lowered the volume control and adjust the volume of the application as well on which you are playing the music file. If you find all these things difficult too, then the best solution is to upgrade your system and install windows again. Install respective programming tool based on the language you are interested in. Install Net Beans if you want to work on Java, Visual studio for VB and Dream viewer for web based applications. Wish you good luck for your future.

Re: Cannot install audio driver in linux

Did you check the sound card? Does your system has a Linux compatible software ?No single site contains complete information for the concerned consumer buying sound cards. For a succinct summary of GNU/Linux-compatible sound cards, you can go to the Linux Sound site. You may also be able to winnow out useful information from the mailing lists of Linux Audio Developers.Another useful source for sound information is the Soundcard Matrix of the Advanced Linux and Sound Architecture project, whose work provides sound support for modern distributions. The matrix is no longer maintained as of May 5, 2007, but its port to a wiki is still incomplete as I write, so, for the time being, you should use the old page. The matrix gives detailed information about each driver for developers, but, so far as consumers are concerned, what matters most is whether a particular card is listed. If a card is listed and the Notes column has no comments about the state of support, then you can be confident that the card will work in modern distributions.
