Alsamixer is the program at which you can configure sound setting and can adjust volume. This program is the advanced LINUX Sound Architecture. It supports multiple sound card devices. You might get this problem if you driver is corrupted due to some reason. To resolve this just reinstall that driver and try it again, I hope this solution might work with your system.

If you want to remove this kind of error then just write simple command in the command prompt. Just write
    Code:
    cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep codec
this command automatically solve your problem. This error may arise if you have bad headphone or has a damaged from inside. Just try this solution may help you to come out from this kind of mess.

If you have some kind of sort with slot means headphone slot you might face this error. To solve this you just simply replace your head phone. If your system is not loading your sound driver then only you may get this error and you will not work on your system means with the sound application.

If you have a plug your headphones into the microphone socket then you may face this situation. You know what microphone is the socket is an INPUT not the OUTPUT for this reason you got this error. To solve this plug your head phone into proper slot and then just right slick on speaker icon and adjust the mixer property as per your need. This solution might help you.

---- This problem may cause due to so many reason such as damaged head phone, socket problem, etc. Which kind of head phone you are using that information I don’t have so I can say that just replace your headphone if possible. Under which window manager you running that make some difference such as Gnome, KDE3, etc. so do as I say means buy new head pone and try again.
