What is Hyper-V and how to use it?

I am not having enough ideas about the Hyper-V, so thought to take some notes from you members. Basically I want to know is what is Hyper-V and how to use it? Microsoft claims that Hyper-V is in contrast to the virtual server is a bare-metal hypervisor that touches directly on the hardware. How can it be that you only need to install Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V later as a separate server role enabled? The Standard Edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 lets you run 2 instances, one physical and virtual. Could the installation of Hyper-V to save money by by Parent partition as full-fledged Windows server and then uses a domain controller running around? I know that this query contains multiple questions but hoping that you members will be kind and provide some solutions.

Hyper-V is Microsoft's core technology for server virtualization, with the company a little late to the market leader VMware took. However, the software is more than just a hypervisor, the tight integration with Windows and the System Center tools Microsoft makes virtualization is not just transparent.

Microsoft claims that Hyper-V is in contrast to the virtual server is a bare-metal hypervisor that touches directly on the hardware. How can it be that you only need to install Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V later as a separate server role enabled?
The activation of the Hyper-V role installed the hypervisor that takes after a reboot necessary to control the hardware. This changes the function of the former physical installation of Windows Server. These mutated into a virtual machine, then access for example via virtual NICs on the network. The original Windows installation, however, retains a privileged position as the parent partition, the driver of the guests at other VMs to access hardware component. Which is also referred to as the root partition is the only VM with direct access to the physical memory and devices.

It is technically possible to use the installation in the parent partition as a normal Windows server. Microsoft does but it will if they can install on productive systems applications used in the parent partition. It should remain the management of the VMs reserved. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends, in productive use Server Core to use as a base system. In terms of licensing costs, Microsoft has prevented such use: If the Windows installation is limited in the parent partition of Hyper-V role and cluster services remains, they have no CALs for them to be acquired. If, however, other applications or roles need to add, client licenses are acquired.

I have observed that many users have also asked the below question in many forums. "If Hyper-V is part of Windows Server 2008 R2 already, then why Microsoft offers free standalone version of one?". After doing long R & D, I finally got some related information which I would like to share with you all. Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is primarily intended steps to computers with Windows Server 2003 or earlier to consolidate the operating system. Into question the free version is also in order to run for desktop virtualization and client versions of Windows in VMs. Theoretically, you can use the standalone version as well, to run Linux guests on it. In the Linux world, however, established KVM hypervisor as a standard. Technically similar to the standalone version of an installation of Hyper-V role in Server Core. In comparison to other free virtualization product is the Microsoft-provided relatively generous. It offers such as live migration, host clustering and support for up to 8 processors. VMware is the pioneer of x86 virtualization, and there is still the clear market leader. But competition is intensifying, especially by Microsoft, the essential components for the hardware virtualization with Windows bundled or free provenance.

As basic equipment for the administration used the Hyper-V Management Console. You straighten out the main tasks such as creating, configuring, starting and stopping VMs, create snapshots, importing VMs or testing VHDs. For remote administration, it is also the RSAT , the tools for managing Hyper-V role included. However, these free management tools for the management of individual hosts are also suitable. Who virtualized servers manage a variety of needs and wants efficiently distribute its resources, Microsoft provides us the System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to. For smaller companies with up to 50 servers (physical plus virtual) to come System Center Essentials 2010 as an alternative in question. They offer a lot of the management features of SCVMM.

Microsoft offers several technologies for this, but uses its own terminology, which makes it difficult to understand. Thus says the company is not para-virtualized, but synthetic drivers. They should speed up access to the network or storage systems, because they "know" that the system is running in a virtualized environment and thus respond directly to the hypervisor. These are synthetic driver is for Windows and Linux, and Microsoft has assisted in the latter only Suse and Red Hat. emulates Windows for other guests, regardless of the actual hardware installed common components of which come with almost any operating system driver. Additionally serve the so-called Integration Components closer connection between host and guest. Their task is, among other things in the time synchronization, support for backup or notification of the shutdown of a guest.
