How to turn off the apple startup sound?

I have a brand new macbook and i want to tweak the sound a bit on this macbook when it gets started. Actually some time it becomes late to reach at class on time, Yesterday it happened. So when i was booting up my macbook then its start up sound made whole class watching at me. It was so embarrassing. Can anybody tell me that how can i switch this sound off so that i can boot up my macbook silently at anytime. Then i thought about turning ON my macbook at late night which can turn ON my dad too!

I am the happy owner since a few weeks of a splendid iMac 24 "2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with of course the version of Leopard 10.5.1. Unfortunately I have still a slight problem but certainly unpleasant, I can not mute "gong" to start the device. Sometimes I get up for work at night when insomnia and I do not want to wake everyone up. I have tried unsuccessfully on two solutions found forums is: "Psst" and "StartupSound. I suppose that this software does not work with my setup. Are there other possibilities?

It is indeed necessary to adjust the volume of the latter change the volume when no devices are connected to the output jack of the iMac. You are therefore possible to completely eliminate the sound by placing the zero on the volume when your iMac are not connected to other walls and it will not affect the output volume of your sound when additional speakers will be connected.

I take the last statement to confirm that as promised StartUpSound prefpane works on all Macs on which I installed. However I noticed that the box next to "Mute" on certain malfunctioning systems, so adjust the volume to 0 with the cursor, it does affect only the startup sound. So i think you were only looking for muting the startup sound but there are many people searching for bit more, Anyways you should try doing it now.

I always have a pair of speakers with external power plugged into the audio output and indeed on my old iMac that was enough to cut the damn noise start but just does not work with this new iMac, the sound not come from there it stays on the outputs of the computer. As to lower the volume or put on silent is true that it works and it's simple but still I see two drawbacks: you have to think to do so and must also consider the volume as they return has restarted and everything on a camera so great on the technology plan that seems to come back to prehistoric times!
