Local profiles unavailable loading temp profile

I have Windows XP installed on my computer. Today when I tried to logged in I got a message which says I don't have permissions to access my profile. So I tried some of the other login but that too didn't worked. No matter what profile I try to access I don't have permissions. Since I am the administrator of this computer, I know all the username and their password of the computer. I finally have to reboot computer is Safe mode to login by administrator and assign permissions to all the user profile. However I would like to know what is the reason behind this unconditional behaviour. Please help!

I don't think this is the activity of some virus or malicious software. If it was due to them then it wouldn't be possible to change even from the administrator account. However, if you still want to make sure this isn't the case then you can run your antivirus in Safe mode and see if it detects some malware. Running an up to date anti-virus software is recommended. MalwareBytes is recommended for scanning virus on your system.

This issue may occur if the current user profile is damaged. To resolve this issue, create a new user profile as follows:

    1. Log on as Administrator.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Click User Accounts.
    4. Under Pick a task, click Create a new account.
    5. Type a name for the user information, and then click Next.
    6. Click an account type, and then click Create Account.

Before creating and or deleting a profile make sure it is the source of the problem. For this go to the Device Manager (Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Device Manager). Double click on each hard drive and under Policies tab untick "Enable write caching". This is surely decrease your system performance but will help you to know what's the problem. Once you know about the problem, you can either find some fix for it or directly try out System Restore to a point prior this problem occured.

It is a Windows related problem. What happens is that Windows renames the user profile and creates a new profile which has no name and is left blank. So to remedy this you have to perform registry edit. Refer this post User Profile Cannot be Loaded error in Windows Vista where you are asked to go into Windows Registry in Safe mode. You are told to go to ProfileList to find 2 similar profile but with different extension. You have to rename the one having .bak extension by removing it.

If your old profile is corrupted in some way, you can move the files and settings from the corrupt profile to a new profile. Open Windows Registry (go to Start, Run and type "regedit". Press Ok button.) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and search for the profile that you want to change. Edit the ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder which you want to use. You need to manually copy the ntuser.dat file there.
