    Winxp hangs at logo screen

ok..... i dont know if this is the right place to post this but i dont know and anyway heres my problem when i turn on my computer it gets to the windows loading screen with the blue bars moving across the screen and just sorta stalls there and continues to do the same thing without out any progression any further for ease of typing i have found a post that basically has nearly identical problem .... although the solution they provide doesnt solve mine . although on mine i dont have a dual boot and only have windows xp SP2.... i dont have the installation disc because my copy is a friends copy of windows my computer has been working perfectly fine and normal until yesterday when this happened.... i tried system restore similar to that post but didnt really work.....iv tried checking optimized defaults and fail & safe modes in bios but still doesnt work... iv also tried checking /sos in msconfig and rebooting but when i do that it gets to a blue screen that just display's my version of windows and the amount of memory iv also tried rebooting in the last know good configuration and that still didnt work..... iv checked the device manager in safe mode to see if theres any problems with the devices but there is no exclamation marks next to anything....Iv also tried unplugging all external hardware to see if that is the cause like speakers, modem, router etc and they didnt seem to affect it so must be something else
My computer setup is: 3.2GHz athlon 955 x 4, 4GB of DDR3 ram, Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P motherboard, 512MB ati radeon graphics card.
its just very strange considering my computer was working perfectly fine last night and i didnt install any new programs or anything.. please can you post a solution or a fix or if you had the same problem and how you fix i..... i use the computer ALOT and dont like going without it for too long so please can you help..... Any help would be greatly appreciated
ps: im not a very good computer person but ill try whatever you say just could you break it down into steps if its a bit technical.....

is that the only way because i dont necessarily feel like reinstalling windows again considering i have a crapload off files and programs on there i dont want to delete and i dont have a EHD(external hard drive) or my windows cd for that matter at the moment any other suggestions that dont require a clean install of windows would be greatly appreciated.

First of all try to start the Windows XP operating system in the safe mode. If it is starting in the safe mode then run the system restore wizard in your desktop computer system. Restore the system settings to the date when it was working properly. I think after that this Windows XP starting issue will be fixed with your computer system.

There is no problem with the computer configuration. It is perfect to run the Windows XP operating system. It seems that some problems have occurred while installing the operating system because of which the system is not able to startup. So, I suggest you to insert the Windows XP disc again and then, reinstall the Windows XP operating system. Just let me know if the problem is solved or not.

well the thing is i can boot in safe mode and have tried system restore but doesnt work.... and i cant reinstall at the moment considering i have misplaced my windows disc.... iv heard that issues like this are to do with driver or hardware problems is there a way to check each driver individually to see if it has any problems because i have looked in device manager and there is no exclamation marks( ! ) next to anything to indicate a problem and i dont think there was any problems upon installation of operating system considering it was working for 6months before this happened.

well, it could be that your cpu is dusty, thus causing over heating, and over heating can prevent a computer form booting normally. However, try booting with the borrowed emergency boot disk.

I guess you will have to make use of Linux operating system to first recover your files. Go to the BIOS and change the booting sequence to your CD/DVD drive. Use a Linux Distribution to boot your machine. Once loaded, take the back-up of your files and then you may re-install the Windows. This is a tedious process but you will atleast get to backup your much needed important data.
