Since Mac OS 10.2, there is a more comprehensive solution than fixing the permissions on a case by case, which is to check them all files that are programs installed on the startup disk (1) your Mac through Disk Utility. This correction permits based on the acknowledgment of installing software that is stored in / Library / Receipts, it is strongly recommended to modify the contents of this folder. It is not your home folder, then the permissions of your personal files are not modified.

You can start on a volume of your Mac containing a version of Mac OS X in your / Applications / Utilities, locate the icon for the software Disk Utility (Disk Utility) and double-click it to launch it. If you boot from the CD or DVD installation of Mac OS X, you will find Disk Utility in the Utilities menu. Then in the left window, click on the icon of the volume that you want to repair permissions. Click the First Aid tab and then on the bottom of the window, click the button Repair Disk Permissions.

Repariing permissions by using a MAC installation disc takes some time, but rule in part the problem of applications that take considerable time to initiate or complete tasks, due authorization impractical and some important system files or its preferences file, that it can happen to change inadvertently. Doing this at a regular basis makes you system a much stable. The manipulation does by other applications is thus reset.

It is also possible to do this directly from the command line, which can afford to do it remotely or in maintenance scripts. The equivalent command in Disk Utility is in Terminal diskutil. Here is the command line to use to repair permissions on files. By giving out the command the disk permission settings will be reset and thus you can work on your systme back again.

If you are a user of MAC OS 9 then you can also repair permissions by using Disk Utility. To do that select the disk that contains OS 9, in the File menu then click on Repair Permissions OS 9. . This manipulation provided by Apple, should be conducted regularly to ensure proper operation of Mac OS X. This is not the only manipulation that allows for a reactive system, but it is most important also.
