Hello everyone, I have been using MAC desktop for about a while now and never ever faced a virus problem in it. But now the system is infected by a jump/redirect virus. Whenever i enter the name of the website, the browser redirects me to some random website. Operating system which i am using is MAC OS X 10.4. Please suggests some methods by which i can remove this virus.

The simplest solution to all the virus problems are Antivirus program. Scan your system with a latest and updated antivirus program. If there are some infected files on the system then repair them or quarantine them. If the files are not repairable then delete them. Be careful while deleting the infected files, as there is a possibility that they may be system files and deleting such files will make the whole system crash. You can also do a online scan on the system at Mcaffee or Kaspersky website.

Have you tried using other browser to surf? Many times it happens that the browser files get corrupted if the update process is stopped halfway. Corrupted files leads to random behavior of the browser therefore install some other browser and see if the problem continues. You can uninstall the current browser you are using and then reinstall it. After reinstalling the browser you can update it to the latest version which is available online.

This is not a virus issue but certainly a browser hijack. Some malicious programs get downloaded while we visit a website. This programs dont harm the operating system but the corrupt the browser from which it is downloaded. Sometimes this issue can be resolved by clearing the private data of the browser. To clear the private data, open the browser and go to options. Now in the privacy tab, click on Clear private data and make sure all the boxes are selected and then click Ok.

Sometimes in browser hijack just clearing the private data does not help. The 3rd party program can also change the network setting which is responsible for redirecting you to different pages. Check the network configuration in your MAC and see if the settings are same as you have entered. Change the settings which you feel are not correct or were not entered by you. To check the preferences, GO to Apple menu and select Preferences. Now select Network and click on the Lock symbol to edit the settings.

Addons and the 3 party application can also be the reason behind the browser hijack. Start the browser in safe mode and see if the browser behaves in same manner or not. In safe mode the browser only loads with the basic requirements. All the add ons and the 3 party applications which are installed are disabled which makes the process of diagnosis simple. If the browser is working fine is safe mode then disable selected add-ons 1 by 1 and find the culprit behind the problem and uninstall it from the system. Hope this post helps.
