Upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 fails at 61%

I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2 operating system for the last 2 years. I am having a 1.5 GB DDR2 RAM installed as a 1GB and a 512 MB separate sticks. My hard disk is of 120GB. I am is using Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Intel motherboard. Recently in the last week I though of upgrading my system's operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7. I purchased Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. But when I tried to install it on my system the installation process fails and hangs at 61%. Please help.

It is been noted that on a large scale Windows users are facing a problem in installing Windows 7. This occurs mostly in between the 60% - 65% mark. A file by the name system_drive:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log is generated by Windows to view the log details. Microsoft has stated this phenomenon is due to problem with the Iphlpsvc service. This service stops during upgrades and thus you are not able to complete installation.

The method to manually resolve this installation problem with Windows 7 is, when you encounter this problem just re-boot your system, this will again load your old Windows XP operating system. Now execute the following steps:
    1. Right on My Computer icon on the desktop,
    2. Go to Properties,
    3. Go to the last tab- Advanced Tab,
    4. Now click on the Environment Variables button,
    5. In the Second frame- System Variables, create a new system variable by clicking on New,
    6. Give the variable name as MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS,
    7. For the field value of the variable type IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll,
    8. To close the dialog box Press OK thrice.

Now you may start and proceed with your upgrade installation of Windows 7.

Hey even I had this same problem when I tried to switch from Windows Vista to Windows 7. When I tried it would hang in between at around 65%. I tried it many times but I still was not able to complete the upgrade. I even formatted my computer re-installed Windows Vista but still when i upgraded to Windows 7 it would hang. I than though of installing Windows 7 on my friends computer to check that the Windows 7 CD is not damaged, but it did not complete there also. And guess what again it got stucked at around that 65% mark. I then bought the replacements Windows 7 CD and then it allowed me complete the upgrade easily.
