Hi friends i have windows XP operating system in my computer. And i have made the four partitions on my hard disk . Three of them are FAT32 and one is NTFS. I want information about these file system types. Which is the better to keep in the computer system? Does having two file system affects the performance of the computer?

Re: hard drive file system information

First of all you should know very well about the files system in windows computers. There are two files system in windows which we can create on hard drive. The first is FAT 32 and another file system is NTFS. FAT32 file system came into the picture from windows 98 operating system. Which is used for creating partition of more than 20GB on hard drive. So if you want to create drive on hard disk of more than 20GB use this file system.

Similarly for NTFS file system. This file type came into picture from Windows XP operating system. This file system is used for creating drives of more than 40GB on hard disk. It is recommended that you should make your hard drive to NTFS file system if it has space more than 40 GB. Windows XP operating system is by default installed on the FAT32 file system. However it gives the option to format the drive to NTFS type (if you want) during the installation process.

Re: hard drive file system information

NTFS file system is recommended for drives with more than 40 GB. NTFS file systems are more safer and faster than the the FAT32 file systems . It means that the data transfer rate is higher in NTFS as compare to the FAT32 file system. Windows Vista operating system is by default installed on NTFS drives and if you are trying it to install on FAT32 file system then windows will format the drive and will make it to NTFS automatically. There is no problem if you keep both the file system on your system.

FAT 32 is an outdated file system and you should not be using it if you do not plan to use windows 98. However file system cannot be changed on the operating system installation drive after the OS has been installed. you will need to reinstall windows XP to change the file system
