Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing. We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer. Ubuntu currently has six month cycle for release. The newest version right now in the market is Karmic Koala.

Ubuntu is a powerful open source software. It is better that you does not have to pay a big amount on operating system and you have same security features. Under such comparision Ubuntu is fine. To get which version of Ubuntu you are using you will have to pass on lsb_release -a in command line terminal. In the same way to get the kernel version you have to type uname -r.

You can get Ubuntu from the official site free of charge. Ubuntu has more new version released right now. The new version is Karmic Koala and then comes Lucid Lynx. Some older versions are Intrepid Ibex, Hardy Heron, Gutsy Gibbon, Feisty Fawn & Dapper Drake. It runs on minimum system requirement and less disk space.
