Lubuntu has been introduced as a lightweight and minimal desktop environment that works particularly well with older legacy PC hardware and devices with less than 256 MB of Ram. That means now do not dump your older machines. Make use of them for making file servers and something which can be dedicated and not required frequent monitoring...

The objective of the Lubuntu project is to create a variant of Ubuntu that uses LXDE, The Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, as its default GUI. The ultimate goal of the Lubuntu project is to earn official endorsement from Canonical. Members of the Lubuntu team take care of LXDE and other packages that are part of the planned Lubuntu install....

It is not long when our mobile phones will be shipped with Lubuntu. The revolution has began. Linux is rising as a long lost hero not in the battle of Operating system for Computer and Netbook but now it has already stepped in the world of operating systems for Mobile Phones and Hand Held Devices. Embedded devices already had linux as their choices... Cheers for the Lubuntu Team...

Wow, thats great news... Whats is LXDE? I have never heard of any such desktop environment. Can it be used on our existing Ubuntu OS like we use KDE and Gnome? I hope we could do that. Also any Download link for LXDE and Lubuntu? That would help too... Well thanxfor the information. It looks like the war of OSes has really began. All Hail Ubuntu...

Here is the info on LXDE as on their offcial site :
"Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment", is an extremely fast, performing and energy saving desktop environment. It is maintained by an international community of developers and comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing. LXDE uses less CPU and less RAM. It is especially designed for cloud computers with low hardware specifications like netbooks, mobile devices (e.g. MIDs) or older computers. LXDE can be installed with distributions like Ubuntu or Debian. It provides a fast desktop experience connecting easily with applications in the cloud. LXDE supports a wealth of programs, that can be installed with Linux systems locally. The source code of LXDE is licensed partly under the terms of the General Public License and partly under the LGPL.

    LXDE Downloads :

    Live CD : Download

    Bootable USB image : Download
