Is your PC a new PC or have you upgraded from an old Operating System like XP? I recommend scanning the hard-drive to see if the HD is defective. You can go to the manufacturer's website of the hard-drive, download the diagnostics utility, put the program onto a CD, and then boot the computer to the diagnostics CD that you made and check for error.
Right click My Computer> properties >Hardware > device manager Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers group > Double click Primary IDE Channel > Select the Advanced Settings tab> if the transfer mode for Device is set to 0 then select the driver tab and click Uninstall. This will uninstall the driver and reboot the system. Upon reboot the driver will be replaced and you should be using the correct setting.
I think that some ACPI EC features are exposed via WMI. The drivers for your motherboard controller that controls your hard driveTry rolling the driver back, Go Control Panel/Device Manager > expand Computer > right click the ACPI device >drivers tab > rollback.
