It keep on saying the same irrespective of what restore point am selected . Any thought on this issue may be a valuable suggestions...

May be your snit virus is making the truoble.can you perform the action after disabling the service for temporarily and select the restore point in order to do it..and see whether the process is successful or not..if it is not working disable the system restore and enable back again to create a new point and try to restore..

Are you sure if there just was not any system restore points or there were restore points but you could not restore them. in this point of view am going to make an assumption there were no restore points. to solve this Right click on "My Computer" and locate the "System restore" tab. If system restore is not switched on then that is probably your problem

Start > Run, and type: services.msc collate services by name, look for the System Restore Service. Right click it and start
    else try this thing also
Get in to Safe Mode After Windows starts, open Windows Explorer.
    Navigate to the \%systemroot%\inf folder (e.g., C:\windows\inf).
Right-click the file sr.inf and select Install from the context menu. You will need the XP CD.Reboot the computer in Normal mode.
