can Boot only in VGA mode or in Safe Mode

    Hello,
When normally booting into XP, somewhere in the boot sequence the screen is black and the computer hangs. Booting in safe mode (with networking) works well and also in booting in VGA mode. I have Windows XP SP2 with AMD Athlon with NVidia GeForce 2 graphics card.
Device Manager shows no problems, update drivers for graphics card with the driver CD also helps nothing.

Is there an explanation for this and possible remedy? The problem first came to after I installed Knopix with the Utilities 3.4 CD worked or tried to work.

    Thanks for helpful hints

Can you identitify what is there in the event viewer?
Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Event Log and then under "System"?
Any red [x] s there to see? If yes, please note the source of error and associated event number and post here.

Did you ever tried to replace the driver on the CD for your graphic card (they are probably already somewhat outdated), the current from the website tries?

The Event Viewer reported no errors. However, I have now reinstalled Windows, but experiencing the same error when I use the graphics card drivers too.
Now am looking at the latest drivers from NVIDIA. If that does not help I suspect a defect in the graphics card (although all the hardware test tools do not get error messages).

It is probably a real hardware problem with the graphics card.

the latest drivers have not helped.

    Couple things to try:
While in Safe Mode, try hit Ctrl+Alt+Del keys at same time to bring up task manager then click on Shutdown tab and select Restart.

Try System Restore from safe mode command prompt.

At the Windows Advanced Options menu.

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlighted choice.

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
    Enable Boot Logging
    Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
    Debugging Mode

At the safe mode command prompt type:

    %systemroot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press Enter and follow the restore options.
