How important is server hardware

I am willing to build a server and just preparing for the cash, anyways bi am looking for a server that can run Server 2008 R2, Exchange, IIS, virtualization and some other stuffs like that same. I have checked out the HP/Dell servers and they are appearing to be quite expensive and they are not under my budget as well, so here I am thin king of build my own server using regular hardware, so just wanted to know that how important is server hardware? Can I use regular hardware??

As far as i am aware HP Kit is the best anyways if you are saying that it is not in your budget then you will need the following:

• ECC Ram
• Hardware Raid Card
• Tape Drive/Backup solution

I also wanted to add that if you are not getting pre-built then you will have to fix out the same.

Before I suggest you something about the same I wanted to know that are you building it for business purpose or just for the home purpose, if you are building it for business and don’t want to invest much then just get the server from dell or HP and then get the hard drives / RAM from where you are planning to get but then I just wanted to add that get one from the place where you can get warranty and support like the quality of components provided by Dell or HP.

I have been running sbs2011on myself build which is having the following:

• Intel Core2 Duo E7400
• Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB
• Western Digital 500GB
• 2 Samsung 1TB HDD
• 8GB ram

The above hdd are all sata ones, if you want then you can build a similar one.

Hey thanks for sharing the same but then I am still looking out for servers but then HP's ML 110 is just supporting 8 GB ram so I am thinking of making my own
