Windows 7 and XP crossover cable connection

I have 2 computers: one with Windows XP and another with Windows 7. I would like to move my files from XP computer to Windows 7. Both the computers are connected with crossover cable. The problem is that I am unable to transfer the files. I tried disabling the firewall and antivirus but still nothing changes. Is it because of my crossover cable or there is some other problem? Can anyone else help me in this matter?

Peer-to-peer connections through crossover cable goes beyond the scope of the 802.3 standard. So you may not expect results anyhow. Try to ping the other computer from each PC and see if the connection was proper. Even update the Windows drivers to make sure that's not causing you the problem.

In order to connect two computers with a crossover cable

    • Connect each end of the crossover cable to the network port on the back of each computer.
    • On one of the computers that is running this version of Windows, do the following:
Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.
    • In the network map at the top of Network and Sharing Center, double-click the Unidentified network icon.
    • If network discovery and file sharing are turned off, in Network, click the Information bar containing the following message: "Network discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Click to change...," and then click Turn on network discovery and file sharing. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    • In the Network discovery and file sharing dialog box, select one of the following options:
      • No, make the network that I am connected to a private network
      • Yes, turn on network discovery and file sharing for all public networks

Connecting two computers via a crossover cable is similar to connecting your computer with a router/modem. Once the cables have been connected, you must go to the network connections from Control Panel; in Local Area Connection Properties, select Internet Protocol Version 4, then click Properties, then select Use the following IP address. Type IP address as 192.168.1.1 (another computer must be 192.168.1.2), Subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 (on both), default gateway as 192.168.1.1 (on both). The IP ranges can vary for IP address and gateway on both the computer.

I think you should use separate subnet mask for your setup with the one which is having internet connection directly connected to your router/modem. Always use different subnet mask in both the cases. For example, if your internet connection is using 192.168.1.x/24 subnet, then its recommended to use 192.168.100.x/24 subnet for your 2 computers connected with crossover cable.
