Linksys router not connecting to new PC running Windows 7

Hello there, I have a small home network configured which consist of Desktop computer and a network printer. The Internet connection is provided by a Linksys router which has wireless capability. The desktop computer is running on Windows Xp operating system. Recently I bought a laptop which has Windows 7 operating system. The problem is that the linksys router is not connecting to new PC running Windows 7. I am trying to connect the laptop to the router using a Wireless connection but it does not help. It shows that the laptop is not able to connect to router. I cant figure out what is causing such problem and hence need your help. Any suggestions regarding the topic are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Check the configuration of the router first. To share the same connection between the two computers, the router has to configured properly. If the router is not configured properly then you will not be able to access the router using the Wireless connection. Login to the router and open the configuration page. Contact the ISP for getting the correct configuration of the router. Check if the router is configured properly according to the configuration provided by the ISP. If there are any changes to be made, do the changes and then save the configuration. Reboot the router and see if the laptop is able to connect to the router or not.

All the devices which are connected to the computer require a set of drivers installed on the computer. Drivers act as a mediator between the operating system and the device. If the appropriate drivers are not installed on the computer, then the device will not work properly. Therefore check if the drivers for the network adapters are installed and working properly on the system. To check if the drivers are installed and working properly, right click on My computer and then select Device manager. Highlight network adapter and see if there are any caution signs. If there are any caution signs then follow the troubleshooting procedure and see if the laptop is able to connect to the router. If not then update the drivers for the network adapter and see if the problem is solved or not.

The network interface card is responsible for establishing and maintaining the network connection. Therefore if the network interface card is not working properly then the system will not be able to maintain the connectivity to the network. First check if the network interface card is working properly or not. To check the network interface card, type "ping 127.0.0.1" in the run tab. Check if there are any data packets lost during sending and receiving. Ideally there should be no loss in data sent and received. If there is any loss in the data sent and received, the network card is faulty and needs to be replaced.

The default IP version of Windows 7 operating system is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows XP operating system is IPv4. Therefore when the two computers running on Windows XP and Windows 7 are connected on the same network, a protocol conflict will arise due to which the devices will not be able to connect to the router. To make the network work properly, you will have to disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7. To disable the IPv6 support, open the network connection and go to Lan properties. Select TCP/IP properties and then remove the check mark from the "Enable IPv6 support" option. Save the settings and reboot the system. Now see if the laptop is able to connect to the router.

Devices which are connected to the router using a Wireless connection are assigned IP address by the DHCP running on the router. If the DHCP is not working properly, then the router will not be able to assign IP address to the device connected and hence the device will not get connected to the router. Login to the router and then disable the DHCP from the configuration page. Reboot the router and then login again to enable the DHCP. After re-enabling the DHCP, save the configuration and check if the router is connected to the laptop or not.
