Sharing W7 with XP across LAN

I can have the two folders and I would like to share them. The 1 folder can have the content that I can not want to be modified by the user. The 2 folder on which the modifications and file uploading can be allowed, But I can not want to open up this folder on another laptop without inserting the Password. I can tried my own password but it can not work. I can not know what password it can be asking for? I also want to know about the Sharing W7 with XP across LAN.

I think that the Password and User Name it can asking you, may be of the system on which that folder can be located or saved. So, first ask the user of that machine about the User name and Password of his system on which LAN that machine can be attached Or told that user to share the folder once again from starting. I hope it can work for you.

First of all tell me, In which type you can sharing?? That means Can Windows XP or Windows 7 having the folders that you wanting to share ? Also can you wanting the Password or not? In Windows 7, there can be a Setting to restrict to ask for the passwords. It can be in the Computer Properties -> Advanced Settings -> Network and Sharing. Try it!!!!

After reading your question, some questions I am asking you for to check or to verify they can be as file sharing can be enabled or not ? An account of the Guest can be enabled or not ? Can the local user authentication as itself or as Guest ? You can also have to verify that permissions of the sharing and file system.
