    Malware protection in MAC

    Hi,
I have some PC which runs on MAC and Leopard. They are interconnected to an network. I had not installed anti-virus in one PC due to its hardware issue. The PC has failed many time and now if I install some other software then it will not work. For that I had upgraded the same to Snow Leopard. Does Snow leopard has a inbuilt virus protection somewhat like a firewall or defender service in Windows.

If you check back in MAC OS X 10.4 you will find that Apple has introduced a new validation system for files which is knows as File Quarantine. This is the dialog box with popped up very frequently whenever you get something in mail or download a file. The action becomes more fast when you are on internet and working on Mail, Safari or iChat. This warning are for those unwanted malicious applications that comes from the site.

That is right. But if you talk about Leopard then this is much more enhanced. The File Quarantine service in Snow Leopard now is equipped to check the more known and frequent threat online called Malware. The file catches such threats on the base of a virus definition file located in the System/Library/Core Services/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.plist. It is really a effective tool.

In Snow Leopard if you does not have any other protection then you can rely on this service. When you try to open any infected file then you will get a strong warning message about the file. You will suggested to delete the file and a validation box will appear. It is recommended to delete the file at once. So this gives out a inbuilt virus protection without the use any third party software.

    Re: Malware protection in MAC

File Quarantine acts as an watcher for some infected files which enter your computer without your knowledge. It will give you warning regarding the infected files from untrusted sources. The system also warns the user when he first opened any other application installed or manually added to the Applications folder. The quarantine system is based on the database LaunchServices Leopard, which stores all applications or executable files added to the Mac user.

    Re: Malware protection in MAC

File Quarantine is not so powerful in some cases. The protection does not work properly, however when some executable attachments are received by e-mail. The example used to demonstrate this mechanism is a shell script contained in a file with a. Jpg. This file also contains information such as a resource fork, indicating the application for the open (in this case it is terminal). The file also has all the appropriate enforcement authorities.
