    setting up home network

I'm sure the answer has been given a few times if i just read some but i am impatient and a little frustrated. First a little background. I have 4 computers which i am trying to network for simple filesharing and printer sharing in my home. For this i will call them "A", "B", "C", & "D". "A" and "B" are running vista and are both wireless. "C" is running XP and is also wireless. "A", "B", & "C" are laptops. "D" is a desktop running XP and has ethernet cable. I can access the internet with all four computers. So i would think that would rule out the router as a problem. So wheres the problem? I can't get them to recognize each other even though they all say the are on the same workgroup.

I guess you will need to buy a switch and then connect all computers or laptops in one single network.

else try router switch from cisco also confirm that you are not having ip address conflicts. idle network must have one router and if you need more connections, you need to install a hub with the desired ports.to have just wireless go for wireless access point. the WAP does not issue ip addresses in router with wireless access point.

If you wish to share an Internet connection using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), choose which computer will be your ICS host.then check for the type of network technology you wish to use. Make a list of the hardware you need for each computer. Install the network adaptors and install your modem on the ICS host computer. If you have the physical network then attach Physical cable the computers together. Switch on all computers, printers and other peripherals. Make sure the ICS host is connected to the Internet. then Run the Network Setup Wizard on the ICS host. Run the Network Setup Wizard on the other computers on the network.

    Re: setting up home network

To make a long story short and get away from the "A B C's", i've added a laptop to the workgroup so now there are 5 computers (2 laptops with vista, 2 laptops with XP home & 1 desktop with XP professional). Four of the computers are now communicating with each other. One problem-child, (oneof the laptops with xp home), does not want to recognize the other four in the workgroup. I have verified that it is registered to the same workgroup. The other four acknowledge it is there in the workgroup but can't access it. The only differences between the 'problem-child" and the other xp home edition laptop it has service pack 3 and the other has service pack 2.

I did fail to mention that is a 'mixed" network. (4 wireless and 1 wired). The only wired computer is the desktop so i don't think it matters that the network is mixed.

The other difference between the 2 xp laptops is a little hard to explain. In folder options/view the last checkable option in the advanced settings is "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". That option does not appear in the "problem-child"s advance setting. Is this something that was moved elsewhere in SP3 or is this omission a flaw in my windows xp.
