Which avast version were you using? Some dangerous infections could destroy avast installation, but, generally, this is avoided by the self-defense module of avast.

    I suggest:

    1. Clean your temporary files.
    2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
    3. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
    4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
    5. Make a HijackThis log to post here.
    6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.

Sometimes some viruses will stop any scanners from running, Have you tried renaming combofix?
Also try renaming combofix before saving it to your desktop as some nasties targets it and stop it from functioning(in that case renaming it before saving is needed)
You can also try other tools frist like MBAM as already suggested, and if they don't run try renaking them too.

    run windows in securitymode

when you boot continusdly pres f8 and chose secure mode run your antivirus your antyspyware everything you have...

    afterwards
unpulg your internet cable and start normaly if the virus comes back format your computer....
if the virus doesnt come back restart your computer with the cable plugged and if the virus comes back check the conections to your pc on your firewalll

ps:. when in secure mode do run->msconfig->startup-> se if anything its starting that you dont recognize (probably on floder system32) google the file to check if its windows based
