Is it possible to hook 2 routers together ?

I am attempting to hook two routers together to share files/lan game as well as have internet access on all machines for our dsl modem.

One router is a Linksys BEFSR41 and I have successfully hooked it up. The other is a D-Link DI 524 and I have not been able to get it to work. It's Wireless but also has some ports for CAT5 cables. Should I connect them with a standard cat5 or a crossover cable? How will I configure the routers to work? Any suggestions?

You certainly don't need the functionality of two routers. What you intent is only to use the switch portion of the router, and you do not need to use the WAN port.

You could hook them up like this:

    1. Cable modem to WAN port of Linksys BEFSR41 router.
    2. Any numbered port of Linksys BEFSR41 router to any numbered port on second router (i.e. D-Link DI 524).
    3. Plug your PCs into any remaining numbered ports on router 1, and on router 2.

Note that you also enable the wireless feature of the D-Link DI 524 router to use it as access point to connect more computers or wireless devices.

What you are doing is in fact putting two routers together. It is not very beneficial however. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it would probably be more beneficial to use a router for your internet connection and a switch/access point/repeater/hub (as per your requirement) to extend the distance or increase the number of ports.

Yes, you will not need a wireless router. The wireless router would work and also you would not be using any of the routing features.

You can buy the access point which must have the ability to act as a client in a WLAN environment. I have never personally tried a similar setup like this, but you should just have to configure the AP with the SSID of the router. I am not sure how many switch ports AP's are coming, but according to me it should have only one port (which will be connected to your router). If that is still the case, you will have to buy another switch, connect your computers to this switch, then connect this switch to the single switch port on the AP.

Do this without both routers connected to each other:

Connect your modem directly to your primary router (i.e. Linksys BEFSR41 router). Pick up an IP from it (something like 192.168.100.1) and note the gateway (something like 192.168.1.1).

Now connect your secondary router (i.e. D-Link DI 524) to your computer directly with a LAN cable. Log into it and disable DHCP on it and assign its IP address to 192.168.100.2 (but not 192.168.100.1 or whatever ip you took from your first router) or something similar. Power it off and run a cable from a LAN port on the primary router to a LAN port on the secondary router.

Power on the secondary router again and connect a pc. You should have a full connection now. Your secondary router will act as a switch/access point.
