Well i would suggest you to wait for the time being since the sandy bridge is about to come shortly this will be the best version of all the cores which are were released sometimes back. Now that the Core 2 has been firmly established in the market, is already being replaced by a new, comprehensive architecture. Unlike the transition from the Pentium 4 / Pentium D to Core 2 - where the CPU worked with the existing motherboard with a pin in terms of compatibility - the new Intel chips need a whole new ecosystem. This change represented a milestone for Intel.

If you want you can go for Intel core i7. Because Intel's Core i7 processor, successors to the Core 2 processors that can offer better performance and high efficiency. With our tests, we found that the Core i7, at the same clock rate, faster by 25% compared to Core 2. Unfortunately for overclockers, all standard models are equipped with a blockade against overclocking. Because the HyperThreading Intel reintroduced, the new processors deliver a marked increase in performance with modern multi-threaded applications. However, the Nehalem platform is not improved in terms of energy consumption.

Its better if you decide first whether there is a need to upgrade your system or not what will be the purpose or motive behind this upgrade will this upgrade help you in future. It totally depends on you whether you need to upgrade your system or not because if its not beneficial or if it does not help you in future then what is the point of upgrading. But i think instead of upgrading your system its quiet good to go for a new if you want to purchase a new one.

Core i7 is a better option since core i7 has increased the distance that separates AMD from Intel. To compete with Core i7 top model, you need two Phenom X4 and a half. As a result of integrating the memory controller into the CPU, the Core i7 processors are now equipped with direct data connection with the memory modules, while the FSB has given way to connect Quick-Path. Intel has increased the number of pins of the socket from 775 to 1366, now called 1366. The mounting system has remained unchanged. A flange sits on the CPU, pushing against the socket, and fixed with a small lever.
