    EFI Installing Windows 7

    Hello i have one Asus K42J notebook. and i want to install Win 7 in EFI mode

    In bios settings i have "Enable UEFI" option that i enabled

    i also convert my disk to GTP and create EFI and MSR partitions according to Microsoft document

    but i cannot start windows setup in EFI mode. system bios contain menu item named "Launch EFI Shell from filesystem device" that show "Not Found" error message

    I use 64 bit windwos setup version

    i couldn't find any EFI boot manager menu. So i cannot start windows setup in EFI mode

    To Install Windows to an EFI-Based Computer

    1. Install Windows by running Windows Setup from an EFI boot entry on the master computer. Use the EFI shell or the firmware’s Boot from file menu to launch the Windows EFI Boot Loader on the installation disk. Refer to your firmware documentation for more information.

    2. From the EFI shell, select the device with the Windows installation media, and then start the EFI boot application.

    Hi hamed,

    I know this post already is 1 year old, but recently bought an asus laptop and would like to also install windows in efi mode.
    Did you manage to install?
    When I boot through "UEFI: DVD" the computer hangs before starting the installation in the screen "starting windows"
    thanks

    Which Windows Operating System yo are trying to install in efi mode? In any case, if the motherboard's EFI NVRAM has been reset somehow (perhaps you got a new board or something) or the default bootloader has been changed. Run
    Code:
    bcdedit /set {FWbootmgr} displayorder {Bootmgr} /addfirst
    either from Windows or a WinPE environment and the EFI bootloader will be set back to the default Windows Bootloader.

    Thanks for your answer einstein.

    I am trying to install windows 7 home premium 64bit.
    Don't know if EFI NVRAM was reset but the laptop is new, so I can imagine the board is also new.
    Anyway running the command
    Code:
    bcdedit /set {FWbootmgr} displayorder {Bootmgr} /addfirst
    returns:
    Code:
    An error occurred while attempting to reference the specified entry.
    The system cannot find the file specified.
    I do not know what this command was suppose to do, edit the bootmanager?
    Running only
    Code:
    bcdedit
    I see listed only entries related to windows boot manager, nothing that seems related to efi

    My BIOS is not the graphical EFI I've seen on asus desktop boards, it is a normal BIOS with an option "Enable UEFI" which is of course enabled (and which makes "UEFIVD" option appear in the boot menu when a DVD containing efi boot - probably folder efi/boot but not sure - is inserted)

    I can in fact boot from this option but the installation hangs before even starting in the initializing screen having "windows starting" with the flag (which hangs in the middle of the animation)

    Re: EFI Installing Windows 7

    Hi jcarneiro,

    Try the below method and check if it works out for you or not:

    1. Extract BOOT, EFI, SOURCES directories and BOOTMGR to my UFD(USB-HDD mode);

    2. change the PBR of the partition to "BOOTMGR boot record" using BOOTICE;

    3. change the MBR to "Grub for Dos" using BOOTICE;

    4. copy grldr to the root of this disk;

    5. edit menu.lst, add an item like this:
    title start windows 7 setup
    find --set-root /BOOTMGR
    chainloader +1 && boot

    6. reboot your computer from this UFD and choose "start windows 7 setup".
