AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core reaches very high temperature

I am using HP Pavilion dv6 laptop which is powered by AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core cpu. Recently I tried to run the SpeedFan application on my laptop just to know the temperatures and I noticed that the report says that the Temp1 is at 85-91 degree Celsius and the Core is at 84-89 degree Celsius. I am unaware about the terms over here and hope someone over here already knows it. This temperature is achieved in normal use of laptop, I just surfed internet to check emails. It seems to me very high temperature and so I am here to ask you if I am correct? Is these temperatures seems to you normal or not and if you think that it is too high or like that then what should be done to avoid this?

This is certainly very high temperatures. Ideally what you say is the normal use of your system which involves usual work on either office applications or internet surfing should not take the core temperature so higher than 60°. The temperature going higher beyond the estimation shouldn't be because of your CPU but instead it should be due to your laptop architecture. This could involve either fan malfunctioning or may be due to some dust over it. You can consult with your hardware guy for further assistance.

There are few reasons and solutions for over heating CPU:
    1. The CPU fan is not working properly, usually it should spin at let say 3500 rpm at full loads, but in your case it might have been spinning not more than 1500 rpm.
    2. The heat sink material is either not present or not properly installed during the processor installation.
    3. BIOS settings is limiting the CPU fan to work at full potential due to some settings.

Overheating problem is a common problem now-a-days and it has been seen that some people even face system shut downs. Many a times due to unconditional shutting down of computer affects/damages the motherboard to some extent. So I would first suggest you to make sure if it is working properly. Then try to change your CPU fan with new which is capable of highly efficient liquid cooling of air for CPU. This will help you to bring your processor temperature not more than 60 degrees at full load.

Many a time it has been observed that processor overheating problem may occur due to poor power supply unit. The bad power supply unit yields poor power supply to CPU fans which in turn rotates slowly. This in turn results your processor to get heat up very soon. You can try either directly connecting your notebook with AC adapter or changing the battery, whatever may be the case found faulty.

If you are not facing any problems then it is absolutely fine but if it isn't the case then you should be worried. Basically AMD processor is designed such that you can just know the maximum operating temperature of any such processors by physically looking at it. Just open the case and look onto the CPU. You should be able to see the trade reference (OPN) of your processor. It is located at the top of the processor. It should be something like this:

    A X1800 D M T 3 C

The temperature is determined by the third character from the right of the OPN. It is always a character which has the values of S, T or V. Here, V represents 85 ºC, T represents 90 ºC and S represents 95 ºC.

    Hallo BansiJ,
I did experience exactly the same overheating problems on my hp notebook hp-6735s in 2009. (TurionX2, running on XP32bit)

HP did not help me, (though I did document the case very extensively for them, and instantly asked for a fan driver update or other real help).

Maybe it is interesting for you (or others).

I hope, your notebook is still running?
