    ohmy The case of the vanishing drive space!

    This may not be the right forum for this question, but I cannot see one that really does fit my problem.

    I am running an older machine which I am getting ready to replace, but in the meantime, it is what I have. A AMD Athlon XP 2200. I am running Win2K Pro with all the latest patches and upgrades.

    I have my operating system and some of my software used for work, (Mitchell Ultramate Collision Estimating), on my C: drive. It is a Western Digital Caviar (about 10GB).

    My problem is this: I began to run out of drive space awhile ago, so I transfered my directory used for storing my completed work assignments onto my E: drive. This boosted my available space to about 2.5GB. This was about March of 09. Since that time, I have been highly aware of my remaining space on the drive, and I noticed something I cannot explain. It seems that every day when I would start my machine, I would check my drives and found that there was about a GB less space on my C: drive than when I shut it off the day before. Sometimes it would be only about 500MB less. At first I thought I was just imagining it, but then I changed the target for all my work to write directly to my E: drive, and avoided saving anything to my C: drive. But the space would still be less and less with each passing day.

    Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Any known virus that works this way? I have McAfee and am current on that too. Scans do not turn up anything. I also have CCleaner and use it regularly.

    I am now down to about 400MB of space left and cannot find where it is being used or what its being used FOR!

    Is there a simple Drive space program which can give a graphical display of drive usage or something similar?

    Are there any of the log files overly large on your pc? You probably need to have some big archives on your HD? Try to change the settings in your log options, for that you need to uncheck "Log non critical" etc, and then try to clean the logs with the settings.

    You may do this

    * Run Disk Cleanup

    * Delete temporary internet files :

    * Empty the following folders
    perform this commands on your RUN
    "%tmp%"
    "%temp%"
    "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary internet files"

    * Delete the Restore points :
    Right click My Computer > PropertiesSystem Restore tab > Tick "Turn off System restore on all drives" Click Apply > Now, Uncheck that box > Click OK

    I thank you for the replys, Mattyboy and Dr. V, I appreciate the effort.

    Unfortunately I have already tried those things. I should have written a little more in my original post, I guess. I have CCleaner, and it does a very good job of deleting all of those items, and still the free space shrinks.

    What I would really like, is to find a little application somewhere online, which is like the old DIR/P command, (directory list page by page) back in the days of DOS 5.0 or even better would be a WIN app which could give me a graph of file and directory sizes in multi color. That way I could pin down what is using all the space and determine if I could trash it or not.

    Anyone know of such a thing?
