Pentium D is a dual core processor from Intel so I would say that it is much more faster then Pentium 4. Although I don't know how much a dual core and if you are going to play games on it then i would recommend you to buy AMd processor instead of Intel because in gaming Amd processor are one of the best and Intel cannot compete them.

No one would like to have old technology everyone would like to have latest technology because there would be some adds on in Pentium D as compared to Pentium 4 and according to me the performance is about the same as a single core when using single or a couple apps. A far as worth it in price, I do alot of multitasking. So for me it is a bonus. It is a lot cheaper than buying a dual processor MB and a pair of CPUs. I do see a trend on Dual Core Processors. Another plus is I'll be set when Vista comes out. Of course I'll probably sell this setup in about 6 months.

If you don't have much more budget then you can even go for Pentium 4 because it has some good features like Versatility, performance and reliability to meet all your computing needs, Greater performance with Hyper-Threading Technology, Scalability and performance with Intel 64 bit and Execute Disable Bit can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system.
