Advantage of using a 4870x2 is that it only takes one slot. Latency and all that other garbage do not make much of a difference. General 4890CF should perform better than 4870x2. 4870 is also cheaper then 4890 .
According to just about every benchmark I can find on the internet, two 4870 in crossfire have almost identical to performance to single 4870 X2.
According to just about every benchmark I can find on the internet, a 4870 X2 is quite a bit more powerful than a single 4890.
From this we can guess that a 4870 Crossfire set up is going to beat the crap out of a single 4890 video card.
A 4890 Crossfire set up is going to be better than a 4870 Crossfire set up, but not discernibly so. It will not be worth the trouble of buying and selling things to get enough money for a 4890 Crossfire set up.

honestly i need to admit it playing around with 4890 so far, and i'm just happy I thought it was just gonna be a dressed up 4870 1gb, but you can push this card so much more than the 4870.
The 4870 was not in the same league as the GTX280/285, but after using both the GTX280 and this 4890, am satisfied
