Hi mahideep,
Based on your post, which OS are you using and which OS is your friend using?
May I know any error messages, there when you are trying to connect?
It could be because of the file format system, the file format on the hard drive might not be supporting your friends operating system.
If your friend and you are using Mac and Windows, to format the drive to use for both the systems, you may visit the link below.
While formatting the drive choose exFAT or FAT32 these both format will support both the OS

Make sure you have a backup of all your data before formatting.

It is Passport probably your friend's PC might contain anything grey. check for hidden devices
