Western Digital RE4 Series Drive are not good for RAID

Has anyone notice issues with Western Digital RE4 Series drive. I had one connect to my RAID setup. The drives are too slow. While in comparison to that the professional RAID needs a much higher speed. I had removed that and not tested yet. Does anyone has faced the similar issue. I had faced this problem with two different kind of drives under RE4 series. The respond rate of drives is very slow.

You must have a look before buying drives for RAID setup. There are certain drives which are tagged as Green drives. This green drives are not actually recommended for RAID. They are designed to work with low power consumption good for home usage. There already many issues reported with raid setup on this drives. All green drives it does not matter which company it belongs is not suitable for RAID setup. While RAID needs a better configuration and constant running drives. Western Digital Caviar Black is one of the best drive recommended for Raid setup. There are other more models with different company make. Green drives are made from the point of eco benefit. They have a bit high latency then comparison to other drives and you can force to get a faster read and write speed. This are usually ignored on by a regular users.

One thing I want to ask about this green drive is the timeout response. What does this means actually. Is timeout response can tell RAID that whether the drive is responsive or not. I had seen through some diagnostic utility that the response time for the same is higher. It was between 40 to 80 seconds while for storage it is recommended that you must have a low response time.

RAID controller when enabled will give you a non responsive drive message if the response is too high. They are designed to check whether the drive will or will not work for the database activity. So it is recommended to trust on the report generated. Because they can tell you that either the disk is reliable or not. You must check properly and if possible get firmware update for better speed. There are certain drive by Western Digital which are marked are RAID edition. This RAID edition drives are low on response time and much more reliable in comparison to others. So always when you plan to safeguard your data do not just go and purchase any drive. Read the specs which clearly mentioned what are the response time and read/write status.

Fluctuation in the response time makes the drive is much more unreliable. So you must not rely on the same. It is necessary that the hard drive must feature a kind of stability to manage the heavy load.
