No sound from dell dimension 5100 after installing new HDD

I have been using the dimension 5100 ever since it came to market. It came with Windows XP previously installed. Few days back I have changed my old HDD and installed the new one. For that purpose I have also re-installed the Windows Xp. After that I have updated all the drivers in it. While started using the system i assumed that there is no sound from the system. There is no output sound at all. My device manager shows an exclamation mark in front of the multimedia audio controller. However my system speakers are working fine with other computers.

The yellow exclamation mark or symbol indicates that the system didn’t install the sound related drivers properly. However in your case it is the driver of multimedia audio controller. If you still have a motherboard disk then put it on the disk drive and click on the multimedia audio controller and choose the update driver otherwise install driver option. If there are any compatible drivers on the disk then the installer will automatically install it. If there is nothing then you must need to download from the Dell official site.

It seems to me that the latest driver is not compatible with the Windows XP or your system. As I know that it is a little old system and still using Windows XP. So you cannot use the updated drivers for multimedia audio controller. You should try the older driver only. If you are still getting problem with the older driver then you should leave the installer automatically choose matched drivers from the internet.

The exclamation mark in the device manager indicates that multimedia audio controller drivers are missing otherwise it get problem while installing the drivers. Try to uninstall the drive by right clicking it. After that reboot the system. Now your computer might be showing you to install drivers for multimedia audio controller. If you have driver disk then install it from there otherwise download the drivers from the internet and make the installer to install drivers from that download file.

I would think that you unsuccessful to install the Intel Motherboard chipset drivers as well as/or the Dell sound drivers. The chipset drivers are an ordinary oversight. On a new/reinstall, the acceptable and necessary install series is
    • Install Windows Xp
    • Install Dell Desktop System Program
    • Install Motheboard chipset drivers
    • Install device drivers counting Video, Dell SigmaTel sound driver, Ethernet, and so on.

Like this manner you should set the system after installing the new HDD. Otherwise you will get this kind of issues.

If your system does not capable to install multimedia audio controller drivers then I think that it can be accomplished by Windows update utility. Some time the Windows update is capable to fix or install the missing or corrupted drivers in the system. This would be helpful if you still cannot able to fix the issue. Otherwise you should contact the Dell support team. They might help you by remotely connecting your computer and fix the drivers related problem.
