DVD Drives not detecting under Dell Dimension 8400

I have a desktop that is Dell Dimension 8400 machine which is been working with Windows 7. The problem hat the device which is DVD drive is not functioning well. I have no idea why is this happening? Please do help me out so that I can make the desired thin to be processed and work as needed. It will be better for the same. I hope to get a better solution which will let the thing to be processed and get to a better conclusion.
