I would like to suggest you that there is a method by which you can try to fix your problem with you cd rom. You need to go into the Control Panel then to the System and to the Hardware and in Device Manager, in that you need to try uninstalling the drive by right clicking it, after uninstalling it you need to reboot your system and see wheather the drive is recognized as a burner by your operating system of your laptop. Also you can try installing a burning software like Nero and you can check it out that it is recognized. Most of the time second party softwares they install required codecs for the system.

In your case if think that you need to open the dvd-writer case and please do clean the lens of the writer very carefully, in case if you damage you dvd writer's lens then it will effect you rom and will not work with the laptop. If this method doesn't help you out then i think you need to buy a new one for your laptop and get it fixed by the technician. I was also having this problem btu sought out by purchasing a new need dvd rom.

I can suggest you that if your laptop is in warranty period then you need to contanct to the sony people to fix your problem. This is the best way by which your problem can be solved, the official company people they provide with the best services which is free of charge within warranty period. They inspect your problem and in some case if the problem cannot be solved then they will replace the infected piece form the laptop and install a new one.

If you are using vista in your laptop then you need to turn off the vista's burning feature.I think the problem is just an update in vista that is affecting the burning feature.
    1. You can do the following method.
    2. Just go to start and in run command and type "gpedit.msc".
    3. You need to go to the user configuration> Administrative templates> Windows components> Windows explorer.
    4. After that on the right pane do a double click on "Remove CD burning features" and tick "enabled button" and then press OK.
    5. Reboot your sustem or logoff and logon to apply.
