Desktop Computer only beeps when i press power button

Hello friends, From few days i am facing an unusual problem with my pc it is not starting. After pressing the power button, It only beeps periodically and nothing happens. My rig consist of AMD X2 2.6 ghz, AMD M2NV motherboard and 1 gb ram. It is around a year old and this the first time it is behaving this way. Does this mean my hard drive has crashed? Do i need to replace anything?
Is this because SMPS? Kindly help

You need to check the power supply (smps) first. Open the cabinet and switch on the power source (dont press the power button, just power on mains). Every motherboard has an LED which will glow only when the power received by it is good. Check the motherboard if the LED is glowing. If it is glowing then there is no problem with your SMPS. If the LED is not glowing then you will have to replace the SMPS.

Remove the battery which is there on the motherboard and check the voltage across it. The voltage across the battery should be around 2.5v to 2 volts, If the voltage is less than 2 volts then the battery needs to be replaced. Replace the battery with new one and try to start the computer. It will boot without any issue's

This is a common problem which is faced by many people during monsoon and winter. During monsoon there is lot of humidity in the air and hence lots of moisture sets on the internal devices of a computer. On the other hand in winter the temperature is low, therefore if the computer is kept of for longer period then it does not start for sometime and beeps. keep the computer on for some time and then press the power button to start. After warming up a bit, it will boot on its own.

Continuous beeping indicates that there is some problem with the system memory (RAM). Sometimes the RAM gets dislocated inside the slot due to some physical movement. When this happens the system will not boot and will beep continuously which is happening in your case. Open the cabinet and insert the ram properly inside the slot. Before removing the RAM switch off the system and unplug it from the power source also discharge your body from any static charge.

Your RAM probably fried. Whenever a system tries to access its system memory and is unable to find it, it gives a continuous beeping sound. Replacing the RAM will solve your problem. As moisture can also create problems in RAM's try this before replacing the RAM, remove it from the slot and wipe its terminal side with a dry cotton cloth and then insert the RAM in the slot properly. Open the locks of the empty RAM slots. If the RAM is good and moisture was the problem the system will fire up. If it still does not start then there is no other way but to replace the RAM.
