First off, if your mouse performs erratically, it may require a cleaning. Refer to your mouse manual for details or Uninstall logitech g5 mouse listed in Device Manager (Right click on entry > Remove/Uninstall) and reboot.
Maybe open the case and make sure its dust free. Sometimes dust can do strange things to a computer. If its wireless try changing the batteries, if its ball try cleaning the ball itself, if its laser, try cleaning the service. Also maybe use the mouse on another computer or try another mouse to see if its a mouse problem or something else.
The most popular (temporary) solution was to press CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up task manager. This also (usually) gives back mouse functionality from a frozen mouse. The freeze happens while the cursor is in different states ie "arrow" pointer, it changes while it's frozen in place sometimes too, depending what the "real" mouse is doing. It may also be possible that a program is causing the system to hang, in which case, you can use Task Manager to end a task which is not responding.
It might also be worth checking if the mouse behaves better when plugged into a different USB slot - the slot itself may be faulty. You should look in System event log for error messages .You can also turn off programs that start automatically in msconfig, then turn them on one at a time after a reboot.
If you look in your control panel under system then device manager, are there any devices(logitech g5) that have yellow exclamation/caution icons next to them?In the mouse properties program, under the hardware tab click on properties. There you can increase theample Rate and :Input Buffer Length. This solved my problem on Windows XP.
